Quip App Reviews

Love it, but bugs

Great app. I have been using it all the time on my iphone and was excited for a native app on my Macbook (and Windows since I use both). However on the Mac OS X version I cannot link to any of my cloud services. I have to got to Quips website in order to do so… Which defeats the point of this app, because once I am there I can do everything I was doing… Which tends to be the case because I forget to switch back to the app. If this bug gets fixed it’ll be a 5*, everything else seems to work fine.

I like this app

Simple and easily to use .

Just download it already

Where has this app been all my life? I have in all reality spent the last 2 semesters of nursing school looking for something like this that can do basic text editing, but yet also natively handle spreadsheets within docs while still being editable (Cornell note taker extraordinaire). The only thing that is even remotely wrong with it is that it handles more like a native iOS app when it comes to inability to click and drag docs to different folders (also lacks the ability to open .numbers docs natively, but expect that will change soon. In all reality I’d have likely dropped $30-40 on this app if it had been a trial to paid app. Because in all reality the capacities of this app are anomalous and in a category of its own (dont believe me troll through appcrawlr and MacUpdate and try to find something that can handle textual input and functional spreadsheet data simultaneously…truly doesnt exist in the world of applications…except here) If it becomes a paid app I ardently hope that they make it a one time purchase and not try to turn it into another evernote, if that happens I’m out. I honestly see this app being bought up by a major player within 1-2 years, most likely microsoft, only because that seems to be the check writer buying up all the apps that i consider indespensable (aka sunrise calendar, wunderlist)

Love it

I absolutly love this app, have it on three devices now that its on Mac as well. The owner is very helpful with any questions and usually will reach out to you with in an hour, great customer service. Only thing I would like to see added would be calender intergration so I can put dates and timelines on tasks. Great job developers!

The hottness!

Love this app! I run an office of 25 people and Quip our lifeline. We do everything in Quip, from recording meeting notes to internal sales reports to engineering roadmaps. The desktop app is wicked fast and an awesome compliment to an already awesome product! Well done!

Beats Moxtra, Evernote, Docs and Pages

I’ve used them all and for a long time. Overall, quip beats them to the punch with MVP features that bring it home. My only quibble is the notifications on iPhone chat are buggy and don’t show badges- which is annoying but hopefully will be fixed. I’m spinning up two projects in this suite of tools and see how it plays out. What really sold me were the pre-loaded demo docs. That quickly got me up to speed on it’s capabilities and funcationality. Keep it up!

Love this service. The desktop client makes it even better

We’ve been using Quip in our small business since early after it was available to the public. We have found it to be a critically important tool that lets us collaborate on documents between staff and volunteers across our state. This new desktop client makes Quip even easier to use on a computer, and brings the desktop experience to the same level of quality that you have with the mobile experience. We’ve found it to have all the benefits of Google Wave with little or no confusion about how to actually use it - which wasn’t the case with Wave. As we introduce this to volunteers, they very quickly understand how to use it and are quickly contributing to the process of document creation. Simple to setup, simple to use, and reasonably priced. Who need’s Slack when you can use Quip?

Great tool - simple but effective

Simplicity is best but imports and exports well too. Great markdown editor for export. Collaboration is cool too.

Problems with Group Assignment

Although document handling appers quite good, I have a serious problem with adding members to a group, in particular, the Family group. When I send an invitation to a family member, which is then accepted, that family member’s email address ends up belonging to me and any items communicated to Quip are shown as sent by me, not by my family member. That family member is NOT added to the Family group. I also appear to have been given that family member’s contact list - not a good idea!

Most everything you want from it, better than google.

Quip’s platform allows you to work with a variety of apps. I loves the ‘text’ feature, and the cloud sharing. Don’t forget to check out the website, you can import contatcts from there, and you can upgrade to business, or enterprise if you need from there. I do wish that the editing tools become better, and they add a presentation software. They should also have improved support for uploading files from other programs.

This app is a web view

Quip seems like a nice simple alternative to Google Docs. However, keep your expectations for the app low – it is really just a webview. You’re not going to get native UI elements when editing, you can’t use most keyboard shortcuts, etc. etc. Still, it’s better than nothing, so I’ll give them two stars.

Love the App But Copy And Paste Is Markdown

I really like this app. I wish it would sync with Google Docs where you can import AND export, but you can’t which is a bummer. What I do love about it is that it’s such much easier to work on than having to fire up a browser and get distracted. It’s streamlined and the iOS app is nice too. It’s great for quick easy writing. Although it does feel just a bit slow when typing, definitely not as fast as Google Docs. If Google Docs came out with an app like this I would be all over. I’m crossing my fingers hoping Google will acquire Quip (as I’m sure they are too!) The one thing I that is a bit of an annoyance is that copy and pasting from the doc is markdown. Bummer! A great feature request would be to resize the colum where text is written. I like going full screen but don’t want my eyes to feel like an old school type writer having to run from one side of the screen to the other. I want it in a tight little space that I can edit. Sort of like Omniwriter does. Bottom line this app has A LOT of potential. Hopefully it continues to get more streamlined, faster, more integrated with Google Docs and an ability to make slight adjustments to the writing experience.

Yes!

Love this app. So easy to work with my team on docs, spreadsheets, and the chat feature helps us stay connected. Desktop app FTW.

Awesome For Production Teams

This is nothing short of awesome. Yes, it doesn’t have super advanced budget or time tracking features, but it’s also free. It allows me and production teams to see and work on shooting schedules, breakdowns, budgets, and just about everything else I really need. Except for one thing. There’s no good way to add a script document (.fadein, .fdx, etc). The best we’ve been able to do (and it works for us since we’re really talking about 1st drafts) is use fountain formatting. Still, all in all super awesome!

Don’t understand the appeal

I don’t understand why the ratings for this app are so high? It does a lousy job of maintaining the formatting of Office documents. It doesn’t allow you to upload more than one document at a time. The interface is confusing (for instance you can add a “chat” to a folder, but you don’t see it in that folder?), etc. There are numerous tools out there that seem to handle all of these things much better, with more features. So why do people like Quip? I’ve tried it several times and each time my collaborators have voted to go back to the tools we used previously.

Quip for Mac is a dream come true

I love using Quip for so many uses with my friends and family, and this new app allows me to do so with a much faster interface, Mac notifications, Spotlight support, and more. The app feels very smooth, looks great, and I’m thrilled to be able to use it! It just keeps getting faster too!

This app is truly AMAZING!

This app is nothing short of incredible. It has completely replaced evernote, google docs, and microsoft office for me. It is incredibly simple and easy to use, works online and offline, supports real-time collaboration, has built-in chat, automatically syncs in real time on iPhone and iPad, and so much more. If you ever need to work with other people on a project, you should get this app. It completely changes how fast and easy it is to work together.

Excited… Disappointed...

I’m a bit shocked at the high average, but there’s some nice ideas here — we found them too poorly executed as a team to stay out of the way of smooth workflows. I tried, we tried, and tried to like it… all ended up hating Quip and removing it. The only glaring deficiency is the seemingly eccentric, at best, behavior of the awkward integrated spreadsheet. A more elegant workflow would involve the number and text processing tool of choice stitched together by thoughtful collaboration enablement. Stil, I’ll watch this one as it matures. Doubts.

Robbed of my personal info

Very Poor app. Needs all your personal info just to open it and then does not support basic file types..Now you have my name and email address..What do you plan to do with it. no stars at all for you.

Focus in the wrong areas..

Quip looks alright and functions well, I just think the focus is on the wrong area. I don’t need a “Slack” app just for documents, I need a document maker. Instead of building all of the messaging noise in, they could have focused on integrating full markdown support or other useful writing features. That being said, I much prefer this to other apps like Google Docs for collaborative work that is not designed to be printed. I still tend to resort to Pages when I want to print the document.
